Today the Grade 5 have learned to change their template from the Pyzam one to a template from Final Sense. We have done this so that there will be no more navigation bar at the top of the blog. The Grade 5 will start working together with a Grade 5 class from New Zealand that left a comment on our class blog about our Billy Cart movie. Mrs. Jane has been in contact with the class teacher. They are from Bethlehem College in New Zealand. We will learn to use some new web tools to share our national anthems and images about our countries.

Meeting this Thursday 22nd November
Dear Parents of Grade 5,
There will be a follow up meeting about the Machines Go Kart inquiry at Gunung Mas restarant in Plaza Niaga near Bakmi Golek. The meeting starts at 12.00 noon and all are welcome. We really need your support to make this UOI an active inquiry unit.
Our aim is to discuss the following:
+ Purchasing Go Kart second hand parts.
+ Finding a suitable mechanic or carpenter to help guide the students in building the Karts.
+ Our budget for purchasing the materials and paying the mechanic.
We hope to see you there.

An Internet Safety Game
Here is a link to a game that gives clear, good advice to children about their Internet usage. I will play it with the Grade 5 during class. I have put it here so that all the parents can see it too.

How much sleep is your child getting?
Today the Grade 5 teachers asked the question:
What time did you get to sleep last night?
Three of the students answered after 12.00am! Here is a link to an important online article about sleep http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20060913/Feature1.asp
When the teachers asked why those three students were up so late on a school night, the answers were, 'Playing on the Internet' and 'Watching a DVD'.
Here is a quote from the article:
"But just because you can stay up late, doesn't mean you should, scientists say. Young people who don't get enough sleep are often late for school, or they miss it completely, says a recent study by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). Sleepy kids tend to be cranky and unhappy. And their grades suffer."
As the class teachers, we recommend to go to bed no later than 9.00pm.

The Dangers of Chatting
I found this video online today. I do not like chatting at all! I do not encourage chatting. Please watch this film with your child. I will also watch it with the class next week.

IAD ... What's that?
Hi Grade 5 Parents,
What is IAD? Internet Addiction Disorder. Here is a link to an online quiz to check if your child is in danger, click here IAD QUIZ
What do you do if you child has a high score?
1. Limit the time online - 90 minutes a day maximum in total with a break after each 30 minutes.
2. Make sure that your child is doing school work and not just playing.
3. Don't put your child's computer in their bedroom. An area like the living room is better as you can monitor their online usage more easily.
4. Learn to make a blog yourself so that you can better understand how your child is using the Internet.
5. Talk to your child about what they have done online. Know what they are up to.
